Nestled in the heart of Slovakia, the Trnava Region is emerging as an intriguing destination for travellers from the GCC, offering a unique combination of thermal wellness, medical tourism, culture, nature and authentic Central European experiences.
Strategically located close to Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic, Trnava Region benefits from the rich cultural influences of its neighbours while retaining its own distinctive Slovak character. It is also one of Slovakia’s most economically developed regions, with excellent connections to some of Central Europe’s most fascinating cities.
But increasingly, it is the region’s renowned thermal and mineral spas that are putting Trnava Region firmly on the map for GCC travellers.
A destination built around wellness
As head of the travel agency connected with the Trnava Regional Tourism Board, I see enormous potential in welcoming more visitors from the GCC.
There is a long history between the region and Arab visitors. GCC travellers discovered Trnava Region’s spas decades ago, with many guests arriving from Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. While visitor numbers understandably declined after the COVID-19 pandemic, we are determined to rebuild that connection and introduce a new generation of GCC travellers to the destination.
This is why we return each year to Arabian Travel Market. We first attended in 2022 as a regional tourism board and again in 2023. In 2024 and 2025, we participated as a hosted buyer, and this year we were delighted to encourage the National Tourism Board of Slovakia to join us.
We believe Slovakia deserves to be better known in the GCC market — and that Trnava Region can play an important role in making that happen.
Why GCC travellers are so important to Trnava Region
One of the key attractions of the GCC market is the length of stay.
Medical and wellness travellers are not typically visiting for just a weekend. Our GCC guests can stay for an average of around 18 nights, creating significant value for the local tourism economy while allowing visitors to experience the destination at a much deeper level.
When someone is staying for several weeks, however, the experience has to be about much more than treatment.
They need to feel comfortable, welcomed and, in many ways, at home.
That means creating a familiar environment while also giving visitors the opportunity to discover something new. In Trnava Region, that means combining high-quality spa and wellness treatments with halal dining, Arabic-speaking staff, family-friendly facilities, shopping, nature, culture and authentic local experiences.
Beyond the spa: experiences with a local flavour
The region offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Slovak way of life.
Trnava Region is particularly famous for its honey, and because honey is so highly appreciated throughout the Arab world, we have developed honey-tasting experiences and workshops where visitors can discover local honey and honey-based products.
In Dolná Krupá, visitors can explore one of Central Europe’s largest rose gardens. It is a particularly popular experience with female visitors, who can enjoy the gardens, take a picnic and simply relax in beautiful surroundings.
These experiences demonstrate an important philosophy behind our approach: wellness is not only about treatment. It is about the entire experience.
Piešťany: the best of Europe’s spa tradition
One of the region’s undisputed highlights is Piešťany, a spa destination internationally recognised for its thermal mineral water and therapeutic mud.
The spa facilities offer more than 60 additional therapies, designed to support visitors with a range of wellness and rehabilitation needs — whether for prevention, pain management or recovery.
But we understand that the treatment itself is only part of the journey.
Piešťany also offers four- and five-star accommodation and facilities designed with Muslim and Arab guests in mind. Arabic-speaking staff, halal food, separate facilities for men and women, female therapists for female guests and dedicated swimming hours for women are among the services available.
The aim is simple: to make GCC guests feel comfortable while providing the highest possible standard of care. The appeal is already evident, with some Arab visitors choosing not only to return for spa treatments but to invest in property in the region.
A Central European base with exceptional connectivity
Another advantage of Trnava Region is its location.
The region offers easy access to some of Central Europe’s most famous destinations. Vienna is approximately 90 minutes away by car, Budapest can be reached in around two hours, while Prague and other major Central European destinations are also within easy reach.
Although Trnava Region does not currently have direct international flights, Vienna Airport provides a convenient gateway. We are also actively promoting the region with the ambition of eventually attracting direct flights.
There are creative ways for visitors to incorporate Trnava Region into a wider Central European holiday. For example, travellers can spend a couple of days in Vienna before travelling to Bratislava, enjoying the Slovak capital before continuing to Trnava Region for their medical spa programme and other experiences.
For a visitor staying for two or three weeks, this combination makes perfect sense.
Slovakia: a hidden gem in Central Europe
Perhaps the greatest attraction of Slovakia is that it still feels like a discovery.
The country offers a remarkable combination of history, culture, nature and hospitality, yet it has not experienced the levels of mass tourism found in many better-known European destinations. There are no endless queues and no overwhelming crowds. Instead, visitors can discover castles, manor houses, historic towns and landscapes at a more relaxed pace.
The region's heritage stretches back through the history of the Hungarian Monarchy, while its cultural story includes fascinating figures and influences that have shaped Central Europe over centuries.
And then there is the landscape: green countryside, mild weather, mineral springs and beautiful spa towns — all at a competitive price point compared with many Western European destinations.
An experience designed around the guest
For us, welcoming GCC visitors is about personal service.
Our organisation takes care of guests from the moment they arrive, providing information, assistance and a personal point of contact — particularly important for visitors who may be experiencing Slovakia for the first time.
We want them not simply to receive excellent medical or wellness treatment, but to discover the region, meet its people, taste its food, experience its traditions and leave with a genuine connection to Slovakia.
That is what makes this region so special.
It is a destination where wellness meets culture, where medical tourism becomes a complete holiday experience, and where visitors can enjoy the best of Central Europe without the crowds.
For GCC travellers looking for a new European destination — one offering wellness, nature, authentic experiences, family-friendly hospitality and easy access to neighbouring countries — Trnava Region may just be the hidden gem they have been waiting to discover.
