Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) has channelled Dh447 million ($121.7 million) into five major cultural and tourism projects, reinforcing the emirate’s position as a global cultural destination and significantly expanding its appeal to international visitors.

The investment is part of a larger strategic portfolio of 52 developments spanning 60 million square feet across Sharjah, demonstrating a major long-term commitment to the Emirate's creative economy, heritage and eco-tourism sectors.

Over the past 15 years, Shurooq has transitioned from traditional urban development to delivering unique visitor experiences that root the cultural economy in creativity and sustainability.

These five projects, now fully operational, offer diverse attractions for the trade:

Heart of Sharjah

One of the region's largest heritage restoration projects, the Heart of Sharjah has transformed the historic centre into a vibrant, walkable district. Its primary draw for high-end tourism is the luxurious The Chedi Al Bait, Sharjah, which, along with The Serai Wing – Bait Khalid Bin Ibrahim, anchors the area as a destination for authentic cultural immersion. The area also features the revived traditional Souq Al Arsah and Souq Al Shanasiyah, appealing to travellers seeking traditional Gulf markets and local experiences.

Mleiha National Park

Spanning 34.2 square kilometres, Mleiha offers a unique blend of heritage and outdoor adventure, essential for growing eco-tourism and experiential itineraries. Visitors can explore archaeological remains dating back over 210,000 years via the Mleiha Archaeological Centre. Adventure activities include horseback riding, camping, mountain trekking, and paragliding at Sky Adventures. The site was recently inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2025 as part of the Faya Palaeolandscape.

Al Noor Island

Located on Khalid Lagoon, this flagship project offers a tranquil, multi-sensory experience ideal for families and short breaks. The island is known for seamlessly blending culture and nature, featuring the popular Butterfly House, landscaped botanical trails, and interactive light art installations. It offers a unique convergence of design, art, and natural beauty.

House of Wisdom

Inaugurated in 2019 to celebrate Sharjah’s UNESCO World Book Capital status, the House of Wisdom is a futuristic cultural hub that goes beyond the traditional library model. Its striking, sustainable architecture and iconic Scroll monument make it a key stop for modern architectural and cultural tourists. Housing nearly half a million physical and digital titles, it also hosts diverse intellectual events, making it a potential venue or point of interest for MICE groups focused on knowledge exchange.

Maraya Art Centre & 1971 Design Space

These platforms cater to the niche segment of contemporary arts and design tourism. Maraya is dedicated to visual arts, while 1971 focuses on experimental contemporary design. They host rotating exhibitions, artist residencies and support emerging Emirati talent, providing a vibrant cultural pulse for visitors interested in the Middle Eastern creative scene.

The sustained investment highlights Sharjah’s commitment to utilising its rich cultural identity as a strategic economic and social driver, aligning with the UAE’s long-term goal of positioning the creative economy as a cornerstone of its growth strategy.
